As I reflect on America's 250th anniversary, I realize that much of my appreciation for this country came from my dad.
My dad and father-in-law both served our country when they were young men. So did my mom's dad and several of my uncles. Military service wasn't just something I read about in history books. It was part of my family's story.
What made the biggest impression on me, though, wasn't simply that they served. It was the respect and admiration my dad showed for those who wore the uniform. Every chance he got, he thanked veterans, recognized active-duty military members and expressed his gratitude for the sacrifices they and their families made. He understood that the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy aren't free.
Growing up, I learned from him that loving your country isn't about pretending it's perfect. It's about appreciating the blessings you've been given, respecting those who sacrificed to provide them and doing your part to leave things better than you found them.
Almost 30 years ago, TKG was a tiny startup. Today, it's a company that helps market-leading businesses grow, serves organizations throughout our community and provides careers that help support nearly 40 families. I didn’t see any of that coming all those years ago.
The truth is that none of this would have been possible in most places, at most times in human history.
The United States has created an environment where ordinary people can take an idea, work hard, take risks and build something significant. It’s a nation where entrepreneurs can start businesses, families can grow and opportunities exist that most of the world does not offer.
That didn't happen by accident.
It was made possible by generations of Americans who worked, struggled and fought for it. From our Founding Fathers to the men and women who have served in our military, led communities, built businesses, taught children, worked in factories, on farms and in offices, each generation has contributed to the foundation we benefit from today.
I believe we are called to be good stewards of the gifts we've been given. America has been one of those gifts.
While no country is perfect, we should not ignore the impact the US has had on human prosperity around the globe. Through innovation, free enterprise, charitable giving and economic opportunity, the United States has helped create prosperity that has lifted millions of Americans out of poverty and improved the lives of billions of people around the globe. The technologies, medicines, businesses and ideas that have emerged from this country have reached far beyond our borders and changed lives in ways most of us will never fully see. Not to mention the notion and example of freedom that America represents.
When I walk through our office, I don't see employees. I see parents providing for their children. I see young professionals starting careers. I see people using their God-given talents to serve clients and solve problems. I see families creating opportunities for the next generation, just like our parents did for us.
That's what America has made possible for us.
As we celebrate 250 years, I hope we take time to appreciate what we've inherited. Not primarily with pride but with a sense of gratitude that recognizes how blessed we are. The opportunities we enjoy today were made possible through the sacrifices of those who came before us, and they come with a responsibility to serve others, strengthen our communities and create opportunities for those who follow.
For me, America 250 is ultimately a reminder to be thankful.
Thankful to God.
Thankful to the generations who built this country.
Thankful to all of our military members and their families who have made countless, very real sacrifices.
Thankful for the freedom to build a business, support my family, create opportunities for others and serve the community I love.
And hopeful that the next 250 years will continue to provide freedom, opportunity and prosperity for the generations ahead.
