What Makes Social Media PR Unique
Communication with the media used to be a fairly straightforward endeavor. You’d send a press release to a bunch of newspapers, journalists would read it, and they’d contact you if they liked what they read. If this wasn’t getting results, you could get all fancy and hire a PR firm to help you with this process.
But with the advent of the web, and more recently social media, telling your story just got a bit more interesting…and complicated. Nowadays, communication often bypasses journalists, going straight from you to the millions of bloggers and content-sharers on the Web. Even traditional journalists are finding themselves turning to the blogosphere for information and sources.
Unlike their traditional counterparts, social media press releases focus less on lofty written words and more on the "meat" of your story. Social media PR attempts to neatly package your message into pieces of information that can be quickly dissemenated on the Web, including video, photos, audio files, bulleted lists, quotes, resources, links, and more. This allows users, whether they be journalists or bloggers, to reassemble or disassemble the information however they want and share it on the web.
Now, this isn’t to say that the old ways of communication aren’t still intact and valuable. Traditional press releases have their place. But we know that bloggers – and even journalists -- aren’t waiting by a fax machine; they’re on the web researching and gathering information, and you need to be there, too.
