When is Social Media PR Appropriate?

A social media press release is ideal if your PR campaign includes multimedia elements or if you participate in social networking communities.  While a traditional press release focuses on the written word and traditional media outlets, a social media press release includes media elements like video, photos, podcasts, downloads, etc.  Many of these elements can be embedded directly into your release, making it super-convenient for users to share information.

Social media PR is also ideal if you have your own pages on social media sites (i.e., Facebook, LinkedIn) and/or have your own blog.  You can link to these sites in your press release, giving journalists and bloggers a better sense of your company and the message you're trying to communicate.

Can I do both traditional and social media press release?

Absolutely!  You can actually submit two press releases: a traditional release aimed at traditional media outlets, and a social media press release targeted at journalists, bloggers, and consumers who use social media outlets.

Just keep in mind that regardless of the type of PR you choose to do, your message needs to be newsworthy.  Just like traditional PR, social media PR needs to be compelling and interesting if you want it to do well.
